I love The Consumerist. It's snarky and smart and everyday it helps me find something to be pissed off about.
Today there's a post on an essay by Michael Crichton (yes, Jurassic Park guy) about the future of science and coroporations. More specifically, corporations putting science in a chokehold to make money. Crichton focuses on Metabolite, who has patented the fact that elevated homocysteine is linked to B-12 deficiency.
I don't know what the fuck I just wrote, but the key point is that they are trying to patent a scientific fact.
This quote sums up the repercussions nicely:
"Do you want to be told by your doctor, "Oh, nobody studies your disease any more because the owner of the gene/enzyme/correlation has made it too expensive to do research?"
The case goes to the Supreme Court tomorrow.
I'm going to patent the correlation between falling down drunk and... drinking. You all owe me money.
Shoot, I owe me money.
