Of paternity disputes and commuter courtesy

Last night during the weekly knitting night I saw an episode of Law and Order (SVU is my favorite) that made me think of a very random thought:

Wasn't My Two Dads the weirdest show ever?  The unsaid premise being, "Hey so we don't know which one of us is your dad, but we sure know who the whore was don't we!"

They should remake that show and make it about two gay dads.  Oh, they had a show like that already?  I meant remake it but not suck ass.

(Correction, I think Small Wonder was the weirdest show ever.  That I loved.)

(Actually Alf was pretty weird too.)

And I'm still feeling a bit ranty from yesterday so I just want to say:

"Don't use your windshield wipers on the freeway because it splashes the car behind you, you inconsiderate oaf!"

(Although that bit of information is useful the next time you want to annoy a tailgater.) (Not that I was guilty of that this morning.)

Hell hath no fury like a shopper scorned

Back in October, I was in lust with a lovely black leather studded hobo bag.  I purchased it from World of Girl dot com and waited ever so patiently.

A week and a half later, no bag.  I e-mail them, politely inquiring if there is tracking number (they didn't give me one with the order confirmation).  I get an auto-response back saying that they appreciate my business but that it will take 72 hours before they can get back to me.  WTF #1.

So they get back to me 72 hours later and say, Oh yeah that bag was so popular it was backordered, it will be another month (mid November) before you get it.  Please be patient but if you want a refund let us know.  Which makes me wonder, were they ever going to tell me it was backordered unless I had asked them what was going on??  WTF #2.

I tell them, no problem I'll wait.  Come mid-November, still no bag.  After obsessively checking the front door for packages, I  e-mail them again, AGAIN politely asking what was going on, AGAIN receiving that stupid "Wait 72 hours" auto-response but then after that... a week of silence.  WTF #3.

Finally, around the beginning of December, I e-mail them AGAIN, but this time not so nice and tell them they better tell me what's going on, ship my damn bag, or refund my money.  And AGAIN  a week of silence.  The WTF count is now up to 4.

I'm about to sue their asses for fraud but I happen to take a glance at my checking account and see that they credited me for the bag a couple of days ago.   Considering they still haven't contacted me about anything this far, I wonder if they had ever planned on telling me they had done this.

So as a warning ladies, don't buy from world of girl dot com.  They have bad customer service.  They are unprofessional.  In essence:  suck donkey balls.

And I still don't have a purse.

Ho, I's totilly not drumk!

It's been about a week since we haven't had cable or internet at home and I am shocked (shocked) that I am not a blubbering mess rocking back and forth in a corner of my room. 

I'm probably doing ok because I get my internet fix at work and I don't miss House thanks to knitting night at Kris' place.  The only thing I find amiss is that I keep forgetting to bring my camera to work so that I can upload pictures, but those are mostly knitting progress pictures and I'm only sheepish about that when I have to face Kris and Marisa (haha, sheep! I kill me).

The quiet and focus that I now have at home is strangely calming and not half bad.  I'm catching up on some books, organizing my bills, sleeping.  If I'm desperate for the internet, I can always bring the PBook to some free wi-fi place and at least that gets me out and about.

Dare I suggest that life continues without cable and broadband?

I can just barely hear the rumbling protests of my roommates.  If I'm really quiet, I can hear people wondering if I'm still drunk from this weekend.

Flashback #3

I don't know about other Korean kids, but when I was growing up I watched a lot of Korean videos with my parents.  I didn't understand most of it, but they usually fell into one of these categories:

• Modern drama - where the couple who tried so hard to be together, finally get together, only to have either the girl die from leukemia or the guy shot or run over by a car in the last 15 minutes of the 20 tape series.
• Historical drama - where everyone wears these crazy costumes and talk really, really, slow.  Usually there's a lot of backstabbing and chest pounding.  (Like literal chest pounding, the Queen will wail and pound on her chest because her son turns out to be a traitor or something.)
• Sing for the soldiers - I don't know why, but my parents liked to rent tapes of singers going to entertain soldiers (kind of like American USOs).  Sometimes the singers went to small suburban towns and there's always someone who looks like my grandmother dancing and waving her arms around.
• Talk shows - Usually it had a LIVE! With Regis and Kathy/Kelly formula to it.  Sometimes it had an entire panel of guest celebrities as the hosts.  Sometimes they had interesting segments, like one show had celebrities go do blue collar work (like harvest seaweed) and then they have to donate their normal daily wage to charity.  A lot of times they have people reunite with others in the past. My mom usually cries at those.

Ok so the reason I bring this up is because for some reason, last night I remembered watching one of these talk shows and the focus was on this one couple... and the only reason I can fathom why they were on the show is because the husband was white and he spoke Korean fluently.

Turns out the guy fell in love but the wife wanted to move back to Korea and he agreed.  After about 10 years, he's fluent.  I remember my parents were totally amazed and amused.  The hosts of the show were amazed and amused. The audience was enthralled.  Heck, I thought it was cool.

But WHY?  Why is it so amazing that this guy learned to speak Korean? If we saw Regis interviewing some Asian girl because she spoke English well, don't you think the protests would be instantaneous?  Were my parents (and me!) racist for our fascination? And if so, GAH!  How did that happen and how can I change my views?

And if I'm not being racist, how is it different than some jackass saying something like, "He speaks very well for a black man."?

Or maybe I just think it's cool in the way I think it's hot that my roommate can speak Spanish.
