When I went to Cabo I forgot to take my knitting out of my bag before I checked it in because, well because I'm just a spaz like that. Anyway, Mabel and I went to the airport bookstore and she bought The Time Traveler's Wife (at my insistence) and I picked up The Good Earth. I was a little hesitant about it because it's an Oprah book and in general, they are very hit and miss for me and when they're a miss, I'm very bitter.
I finished this the book by the time we were flying back to San Diego so I guess this one's a hit. It takes place in China and recounts a poor countryman's rise to prosperity. The story's range is sufficient enough to call it an epic, but it's very readable and surprisingly fast-paced. It's very simply written but the human emotions and complications of life and fate are not short changed. This one is definately going in the "books that I think about long after I've finished them" list.
The book's background is pretty interesting because it's written by a nobel-prize winning white female. It's interesting in the way that Memoirs of a Geisha was written by a white man.
I also feel very smart reading a book that has won the Pulitzer prize.
