I'm really into song lyrics. I'm fascinated by how words can bring meaning to things that used to be abstract. For example, let's take some lyrics from one of my favorite songwriters. Call her depressing, angsty, or just plain weird, but Fiona Apple has a way with words.
Love ridden, I've looked at you
With the focus I gave to my birthday candles
"Love ridden", what a great phrase! It almost sounds like an illness, definately intense, and moody. But then using birthday candles brings up thoughts of childhood, innocence, and wishful thinking. It's just an example of how I like songs to be poetry set to music.
Then there are the songs that I just love to listen to but I have to zone out while I listen to them because the words are just gibberish. I'd say most modern "hip hop" is a good example. Need an example?
1, here comes the 2 to the 3 to the 4
everybody drunk out on the dance floor
babygirl ass jiggle like she want more,
like she a groupie and i aint even on tour
That actually makes more sense than most other hip hop on the radio. But it's fine, because when it's playing I just want to go out dancing and that's good enough for me to like a song too.
Now, what drives me crazy are the songs that I really like except for that *one* line that makes me go "huh?" and I have to kind of blip out for those few seconds of the song because if I concentrate on it, I may end up hating the song because of that one little thing. I actually have two examples of this.
One is "Nothin' else" by Justin Timberlake. I know, I know, I shouldn't be expecting much from him anyway. This is true. But "Nothin' else" is a perfectly good song with "ok" lyrics and a snappy beat. So I'm boppin' along listening to it and I get to this line:
You're outta this world except you're not green
W.T.F? The lameness of this boggles my mind. Anyway, I try very hard to ignore this line except it's in the chorus so it's kind of hard.
The second example is "Destiny" by Zero7. This is a beautiful song about a relationship torn by distance, but she keeps the faith because she knows they are meant to be. But then in the beginning is the line:
I'm watching porn in my hotel dressing gown
Ok the first time I heard it, I had to rewind and play it over and over again because I could swear that's what she was saying but it just couldn't be right. But it is! And she sings it in this really pretty way. It just doesn't fit the rest of the song and it's really out of context.
Those are two examples that I can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure there are more out there that make me think, "Why? Why would you write that, sing that, and record that? Why??"
Anyway, the upside is that when this kind of thing happens in a song, I can't sing them out loud anymore so you don't have to hear me trying to be a diva.
